Early Life, Career and Biography
Nigerian Singer and rapper, Naira Marley was born in Agege, Lagos State, Nigeria but later moved to Peckham in South London when he was only eleven (11) years old. Naira Marley’s real name is Azeez Fashola. His biography reveals that he got his stage name from Bob Marley the Music Legend. He claimed Bob was his musical inspiration. To show that he and Bob Marley had something in common, he did dreadlock which was Bob Marley’s natural Hear.
According to Naira Marley, he had never planned to be an artist. His childhood ambition was to become an MC and voice-over artiste but as time went on he realized that he has a music talent. It got to a point when he moved to Peckham from Lagos aged 11 and kept his strong Nigerian accent. He also made a decision at some point to help his MC friends in Peckham to manage their rap careers but later found out that he is talented when it comes to sitting on beats.
Then he steadily gets to work! He started unleashing his potentials in the year 2014. Naira Marley discovered his singing talent when he was urged by his friends to sing in one of their recording sessions in the studio which was just a joke. According to him “I paid for my mates to go to the studio because I thought they had talent\’. This happened because he undermined himself because he never believed there is a chance for him in the hip hop world.
He started paying for studio sessions for himself, then gradually, he kept visiting the studio almost every time. Successfully, they did some records, and somehow there was space on the track, so they were like, ‘jump on it’ I was like ‘are you sure? In my accent?'(his Nigerian accent). But I jumped on it anyway”. To Naira Marley’s and everyone’s amazement, his verses became the bars that were rated the most by the crew.
After noticing his talent and prospect in his music career, he then decided fully to pursue his music career and this time there is no going back. After some time, he did a solo track which he titled ‘Marry Juana’ featuring Max Twigz, one half of the Cannabis Boyz which was an instant UK street jam. The single titled ‘Marry Juana’ was a fusion of dancehall rhythms and Naira Marley’s strong Nigerian accent. The song was widely considered the first of its kind ‘Afrobashment’ tune and it enjoyed massive airwaves. In addition, it was played in many homes because they loved it.
The song was an Ode to we*d and became a street anthem. It also brought Naira Marley out as an artist to look out for in the UK underground scene. His name was vividly mapped as one of the fast-rising rappers in Nigeria. The song had an attitude of grime and rap, melody and a dancehall appeal of its own. According to his biography, this song marked the turning point of his career and destiny.
According to the rapper, No one was doing this before he started. He added, “There was no Kojo Funds, no Mostack. I did set the afro-whatever. And now everyone’s on it, and it sounds proper”.
The eccentric rapper named Naira Marley has shown a wild versatility in his approach of music, moving from the 120bpm afro-house of tracks such as ‘Cele’ to ‘Money on the Road.’ ‘Money on the Road’ was the melodic fusion of afro melodies and street hustler lyrics that got Naira Marley millions of views. He manifests a unique charisma, a mix of badman thing and prankster with his songs skipping between ga*g chat and jokes often in the space of a verse.
He also spawned out one of the World cup songs of the year titled ‘Issa Goal’. He featured Olamide and Lil Kesh in the song where he fused UK funky drum patterns with Party lyrics. According to the rapper, the song was a way of paying homage to the Super Eagles of Nigeria and a way to motivate the players to do well in the game. The song ‘Issa goal’ caused massive waves worldwide from soundtracking as Arsenal warm-ups and the Emirates to being heard on Instagram videos of school kids dancing to it. This was a great sign that the artist is really doing well and he has come to stay in the Nigerian music industry.
